Rockville, MD — November,24, 2025
More than 20 students from the Greater Washington Youth Club participated in the Yi-Radio YouthTalks program and visited the Montgomery County Board of Education (MCPS Board) for a special civic engagement experience designed to introduce young people to public governance, leadership, and educational decision-making.

The visit was hosted by Julie Yang, President of the Montgomery County Board of Education, together with Yolanda Faerber, Coordinator of Constituent Services. The event offered students an inspiring afternoon filled with civic learning, open discussion, and direct interaction with Board leadership.

Warm Welcome & Introduction to the Board

The program began with a warm welcome from Board President Julie Yang, who introduced the students to the mission of the Board of Education, the role of public meetings, and why student voices hold significant value in shaping school policies across Montgomery County.

Students’ Questions and Long-Table Discussion

As part of the YouthTalks program, students from the Greater Washington Youth Club arrived with thoughtful questions about school life, educational policy, and the responsibilities of Board members.

During the long-table discussion, students actively asked President Julie Yang their questions. She responded warmly and encouraged every student to express their views with clarity and confidence.

Through this dialogue, students gained insight into how the Board operates, the duties of various offices, and how educational policies are formed. They also had a rare opportunity to share their own school experiences and suggestions directly with Board staff—making this a meaningful two-way exchange.

Voices of Our Schools Activity

In the Voices of Our Schools session, President Yang invited students to talk about their school experiences, concerns, and ideas. Students learned that civic participation begins with speaking up and sharing perspectives that matter to them.

Q&A Session with President Julie Yang

Students then engaged in an open Q&A, raising questions about school safety, curriculum, leadership roles, community engagement, and the decision-making process within MCPS.
President Yang’s thoughtful responses helped students understand the real responsibilities of public officials.

One of the highlights of the visit was the YouthTalks interactive civic learning session. Although students did not sit in the official board seats, they closely observed the Board’s presentation environment and learned how Board members communicate during meetings.

The children asked their prepared questions and, in this real board-meeting environment, learned how Board members discuss issues and how a resolution is passed. This helped them clearly see the process of communication, discussion, and decision-making within public education governance.

Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Board Offices

Guided by Board staff, students toured the Board office areas, hallways, and committee spaces. They learned about the history of MCPS leadership, the responsibilities of each department, and how public service supports thousands of families across the county.

Leadership, Confidence, and Community Engagement

Parents and mentors proudly watched the students step into leadership roles, ask insightful questions, and engage in the civic environment with maturity and enthusiasm.

The event—co-organized by Yi-Radio YouthTalks and Greater Washington Youth Club —connected young people with real-world governance and fulfilled YouthTalks’ mission:“Bridging Curiosity & Wisdom.”

YI-Radio YouthTalks &

Julie Yang

Voices of Our Schools

Julie Yang
